University of Tasmania in Australia offers Bachelor of environmental design (architecture) and some other universities offer Bachelor of design (architecture). What is the difference between the two degrees. Both the degrees leads to a masters in architecture and with that can be registered with the association of architects. I want a degree in architecture but I am afraid a Bachelor of environmental design (architecture) from University of Tasmania will be less recognised than a Bachelor of design because I know environmental design is different from architecture.
Thanks.

Its quite self explanatory if you ask me.

Bachelor of Design (architecture)
Its mainly designing but will have courses/subjects that will be the same as architecture students. But may not concentrate 100% on architecture but the theories and concept may be related to architecture.

Bachelor of Environmental Design
Is designed for architectural students that feel that have some environmental factors in it can help with their career. These could be less on buildings but more on gardens, environment factors, parks, zoos, etc…

Thats what i think, but the best is call/ask the universities course leaders for more details.

Product Description

Clear and accessible, Analysing Architecture opens a fresh way to understanding architecture. It offers a unique ‘notebook’ of architectural strategies to present an engaging introduction to elements and concepts in architectural design. Beautifully illustrated throughout with the author’s original drawings, examples are drawn from across the world and many periods of architectural history (from prehistoric times to the recent past) to illustrate analytical themes and to show how drawing can be used to study architecture. Since its first edition appeared in 1997, Analysing Architecture has established itself internationally as one of the key texts in architectural education.

This third edition includes a new section discussing the ways analyzing examples cultivates a capacity for design. Original chapters have been expanded, new case studies added, and the format rearranged for additional clarity. The bibliography of recommended supplementary reading has also been extended.

In Analysing Architecture, Simon Unwin clearly identifies the key elements of architecture and conceptual themes apparent in buildings and relevant to other works of architecture such as gardens and cities. He describes ideas for use in the active process of design. Breaking down the grammar of architecture into themes and ‘moves’, Unwin exposes its underlying patterns to reveal the organizational strategies that lie beneath the superficial appearances of buildings.

Exploring buildings as results of the interaction of people with the world around them, Analysing Architecture offers a definition of architecture as ‘identification of place’ and provides a greater understanding of architecture as a creative discipline. This book presents a powerful impetus for readers to develop their own capacities for architectural design. It will also be of use to all those with an interest in the human occupation of and involvement with space – anthropologists, archaeologists, film-makers, installation artists, planners, urban designers, politicians.

A companion website will be available at www.routledge.com/textbooks/9780415489287.

I am just wondering because I am just starting my first semester as a sophomore and I am seriously thinking about going for an architecture degree. I have heard from numerous people that it is really hard to get an architecture degree but I really haven’t had a good explanation as to why. If I could have someone who knows a lot about it architecture and the process through college I would be very thankful. Thanks in advance.

First of all, most reputable architecture schools are difficult to get into since they have limited openings each year. The courses are not difficult, it just a matter of the amount of work. While I was in school, I often would spend 72 hours without sleep working on a project in studio. Other people in my class would be on a similar schedule. The philosophy in design studio is that you start being behind and you will never catch up. Your professor and the visiting jurors will reinforce that during grading/judging. You practically end up living in the Studio with all your classmates. Architecture School is a marathon that pushes your body and mind to its limits.

What was the style of architecture during the 1960′s and before throughout Chicago? How does "modern" architecture fit here in Chicago architecture at the time?
Thanks.

At first stick buildings were seen. They have glass walls. Later stone temples were built. One had windows in straight lines between the stone, The other had glass only in its doors.

The 1960s brought an end of about 40 years of no new distinctive buildings in Chicago. 860-880 N Lake Shore Drive changed that. The 26 floor, 254 ft (82 m) tall towers were designed by the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and dubbed the "Glass House" apartments:

The same architect had similar lines but closer to the ground on the south side on the IIT campus:

The next important building was the tallest in the city…The Prudential Building with a restaurant, observation deck and WGN radio transmitters on the top floors dubbed, "The Top of the Rock"

The next distinctive building was to provide more room for conventions. This version of McCormick Place had no windows. It was demolished after being destroyed by fire in 1967:
